Passing of a legend

2004 Russ Byars at Fudge Shop

2004 Russ Byars at Fudge Shop

Like any kid who wants to be a stone skipping rock star, Rock-Bottom Byar’s was the pinnacle.   Russ held the Guinness world Record for skipping a stone at 51 skips.  And like a pro, he handled the spot light very well, as he rose to fame, becoming one of the greatest ambassadors of the Grand Olde Sport.

He traveled to China, France and several other locations showing his talents to many a crowd.  He was both proud and sincere with every stone he autographed for his fan base.  His shirt said he “Skips stones for fudge”.   And boy could he skip! Competitive to the end, Russ even won the 2017 Mackinac Island Rabe Pro-Invitational, an event he had dominated for several years.

So it is with sad heart we inform the Stone Skipping world that Russ has passed on Oct 7th 2017.    Even his competitors respected and admired him, and he was a tremendous guiding force to all he mentored.

With great memories we say goodbye to our friend Russ, he will not be forgotten.

Rest in Peace!   – All of us at  the M.I.S.S. & G.C.
